NAME: Shorter Wong
CANON: Banana Fish
CANON POINT: Just prior to his final separation from Eiji
AGE: It's not canonly given, but it's fair to assume he's either 17 or 18, given the timeline of the series.
BACKGROUND: normally i'd link just one thing, but of the three info-dumps on the internet about shorter, none of them really give the "whole" picture, so imma link all thhree: wikia, mal, amino
PERSONALITY:
Shorter was essentially raised in the New York Triad system, having lived among gang politics all his life. While it's never specified which gang he was specifically affiliated with, it's ultimately unimportant as he runs most of the youth gangs in Chinatown by the start of the series, really only beholden to higher ups in the Lee family (so post unification, probably). This background sort of informs the personality Shorter grew into as he aged. The chief aspect of Shorter that he learned coming up in this system is loyalty.
For Shorter, his loyalty comes in tiers. He is first loyal to his immediate family, which includes his blood-related sister, but also the kids he's in charge of in his gang. Second comes Ash, to whom he serves as a sort of right-hand though they lead separate gangs. Theirs was a bond unified through shared adversity, and a deep empathy Shorter holds for Ash's dark part, and his goal of liberating himself from the dons that control him. Anyone Ash chooses to trust falls under this tier as well, as Shorter is also deeply loyal to Eiji, Ash's beloved friend. Distant from all of these is the Lee family itself, whom he's served in one form or another since childhood. He's not particularly fond of the Lee family, or their control over Chinese gang politics, but he understands where his food comes from, so to speak, and will not betray them unless they challenge the other two tiers of his loyalty. In fact, his ultimate 'betrayal' of Ash, if it can even be called that, only happens because the Lee family directly threaten the life of his sister. For Shorter, loyalty is the greatest virtue in life, and it must be handled with respect.
Shorter's heart is pretty big, and it doesn't take much for him to feel empathy for others. He's always felt he should live his life through acts of kindness given to those who otherwise would receive none. People who are mistreated and abused by others, in particular, are able to more keenly find their way to his soul. He's known Ash for at least four years and loves him as his brother, and extends that kindness to anyone Ash has chosen to trust. Those who suffer are those who inspire Shorter's tears, and it's even part of why he constantly hides his eyes, as he's particularly honest when something impacts him that way. His understanding of Yut-Lung's suffering from his brothers is what prevents him from killing him, even when he had the chance (well, that and the Lee family essentially holding his sister hostage).
It takes a lot of guts and courage to survive in the world of gangs and crime that Shorter has grown up in. He's pretty fearless, only really being reeled in when his family is threatened. He frequently puts himself in harm's way for both Ash and Eiji's sake (particularly Eiji, going so far as to threatening to kill Eiji and himself to prevent Eiji from becoming a victim of sexual slavery). Even in his darkest moment, while crazed and maddened beyond help by the Banana Fish drug, he demanded Ash kill him so that he wouldn't take Eiji's life in a fit of insanity. Shorter faces death directly, and frequently, without so much as flinching.
Part of how he copes with all of this is his sense of humor. Shorter, in most situations, is always at least smirking, if not smiling, which can be disarming for some, but it's really just part of who he is. He's always quick with a quip or barb to keep things light, even in grim situations. He adores pranking people, and frequently uses his disguise skills to pull one over on others, particularly his friends. He gets through an impossibly hard life with a laugh, if only to keep himself from crying...
POWERS/ABILITIES:
Shorter has no special powers or anything remotely supernatural, but he does have the abilities and skills he's learned over a lifetime of street crime and navigating the politics thereof.
- He's trained in basic martial arts, namely judo and some kickboxing.
- He can use multiple types of firearms.
- He has understanding of make-up and disguise techniques
- He's a trained cook, mostly short orders (ha! puns)
- He can dress field wounds quickly, perform advanced first aid if needed
- He has diplomacy skills, as well as a functioning tactition's sense.
INVENTORY: The clothes on his back, a .45 caliber semi-automatic pistol with full clip, an additional clip, his sunglasses, a switchblade knife, and a pocket recipe book.
